I have been lucky enough these last couple of years to immerse myself in the fascinating world of The Blue Rider, a German Expressionist group which shone briefly but brightly before the First World War. These artists are known, not only for their groundbreaking canvases but for the intensity of the lives behind them. Formed in Munich in 1911 by Wassily Kandinksy, Gabriel Munter and Franz Marc, it was less a school than a gathering of restless and brilliant spirits.
I have just finished two novels--one on Gabriele Munter and one on Franz Marc, both members of The Blue Rider, and both characters of admirable boldness and talent. These were artists caught at the cusp of catastrophe--the First World War looming, Europe in flux, tradition breaking apart.
I hope to share both their stories of passion and idealism and bring one of the most mythic chapters in modern art history to life.
